The small city of Winnfield is the parish seat of Winn Parish, in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 5,749 at the 2000 census. It is also the birthplace of Huey P. Long and Earl Long, former governors of Louisiana.
Geography
Winnfield is located at (31.923339, -92.640308)[Geographic references#1GR1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 5,749 people, 2,172 households, and 1,446 families residing in the city. The population density was 668.6/km² (1,733.4/mi²). There were 2,554 housing units at an average density of 297.0/km² (770.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 48.29% White, 49.83% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.16% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.15% of the population.There were 2,172 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.9% were married couples living together, 24.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the city the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $19,342, and the median income for a family was $25,201. Males had a median income of $27,123 versus $14,267 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,180. About 25.2% of families and 31.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.5% of those under age 18 and 28.9% of those age 65 or over.

Winnfield hosts the "Uncle Earl Hog-Dog Trials" each spring. It is said to be the largest such festival of its kind in the world, routinely drawing close to 10,000 people from virtually every state in the United States, as well as foreign guests.
