Wixom is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 13,263 at the 2000 census. The city is also home to the Wixom Assembly Plant, a Ford Motor Company auto plant. The Lincoln LS and Town Car, the Ford Thunderbird, as well as the Ford GT, are all manufactured here. However, on January 23, 2006, Ford announced that this plant will be shut down by 2008.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.5 km² (9.5 mi²). 24.2 km² (9.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.27%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there were 13,263 people, 5,889 households, and 3,150 families residing in the city. The population density was 548.3/km² (1,420.0/mi²). There were 6,086 housing units at an average density of 251.6/km² (651.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.40% White, 2.50% African American, 0.51% Native American, 2.85% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.55% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.20% of the population.

There were 5,889 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.5% were non-families. 37.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 14.0% from 18 to 24, 39.1% from 25 to 44, 16.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 109.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $44,320, and the median income for a family was $64,918. Males had a median income of $45,798 versus $30,942 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,543. About 4.5% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.0% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.

The city of Wixom is presided over by Mayor Michael McDonald.
