Wood-Bright Professor of Women's Studies

Encyclopedia : W : WO : WOO : Wood-Bright Professor of Women's Studies

The Wood-Bright Professor of Women's Studies is a Named chair at the University of Adelaide School of Medicine. It was established in 2005 after an endowment by Pfizer, Inc., which Pfizer made to acknowledge the long-standing reputation of the School in the field of women-related issues. It is named after Drs Frederic "Wood" Jones and Timothy Bright.

In particular, the chair was created to honour the outstanding achievement in the field of excellence with women of Frederic Wood Jones. During his time at the University of Adelaide School of Medicine in the 1920s as Professor of Anatomy, Dr Jones was popularly known simply as "Wood". Dr Jones was the driving force behind establishing the reputation of the University of Adelaide School of Medicine as a leader in the field of women. The tradition laid down by Dr Wood re-emerged to eminence during the 1990s through the work of Dr Tim Bright.

The inaugural Wood-Bright Professor is Dr Nic Frost, who was appointed to the position in recognition of his years of dedicated servicing of some of the most desperate women in Australia. Dr Frost has given many Australian women what they needed through his own sacrifice and selflessness.

Critics have alleged Pfizer's endowment to the School was a cynical attempt to promote its erectile dysfunction medication, Viagra. It has been alleged Pfizer pressured the School to appoint Dr Frost as the inaugural Wood-Bright Professor because he is well-known locally to be a proponent of regular use of the drug. Both Pfizer and the School of Medicine have rigorously denied these allegations.
