Wood-Ridge is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 7,644.

Geography

Wood-Ridge is located at [40°50′51″N, 74°5′15″W] (40.847638, -74.087549)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 7,644 people, 3,024 households, and 2,137 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,683.1/km² (6,958.5/mi²). There were 3,087 housing units at an average density of 1,083.5/km² (2,810.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 91.01% White, 0.84% African American, 0.08% Native American, 5.02% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.77% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.27% of the population.

There were 3,024 households out of which 29.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the borough the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $60,949, and the median income for a family was $72,500. Males had a median income of $48,309 versus $40,025 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $29,865. About 0.8% of families and 1.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.6% of those under age 18 and 2.8% of those age 65 or over.

Government

The Mayor of the Borough of Wood-Ridge is Mayor Paul Sarlo, who also represents the district in the New Jersey Senate. Members of the Wood-Ridge Borough Council are Ezio I. Altamura, Dominick Azzolini, Richard Carbonaro, Catherine Cassidy, Thomas C. Gonnella and Robert Riccardella.

Local government

Federal, state and county representation

Wood-Ridge Borough is part of New Jersey's 36th Legislative District and is in the Ninth Congressional District.

New Jersey's Ninth Congressional District, covering the southern portion of Bergen County and sections of Hudson County and Passaic County, is represented by Steve Rothman (D, Fair Lawn). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Robert Menendez (D, Union City).

The 36th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Paul Sarlo (D, Wood-Ridge) and in the Assembly by Frederick Scalera (D, Nutley) and Gary Schaer (D, Passaic). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Bergen County's County Executive is Dennis McNerney. The executive, along with the Board of Chosen Freeholders administer all county business. Bergen County's Freeholders are Chairwoman Bernadette P. McPherson of Rutherford, Vice-Chairman David L. Ganz of Fair Lawn, Elizabeth Calabrese of Wallington, James M. Carroll of Demarest, Tomas J. Padilla of Park Ridge, Elizabeth Randall of Westwood and Valerie Vainieri Huttle of Englewood.

Politics

On the national level, Wood-Ridge leans toward the Republican Party. In 2004, Republican George W. Bush received 53 percent of the vote here, defeating Democrat John Kerry, who received around 46 percent.

Education

Students in Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade attend the schools of the Wood-Ridge School District. Schools in the district (with 2003-04 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are [Catherine E. Doyle Elementary School], with 364 students in Kindergarten through 4th grade; [Grett R. Ostrovsky Middle School], with 308 students in grades 5-8; and Wood-Ridge High School, with 367 students in grades 9-12.

For grades nine through twelve, students from Moonachie attend Wood-Ridge High School, as part of a sending / receiving relationship.

Transportation

Wood-Ridge is served by New Jersey Transit on the Pascack Valley Line at the Wood-Ridge train station. The station is located at Park Place East near the intersection with Route 17.

This line runs north-south to Hoboken Terminal with connections via the Secaucus Junction transfer station to New Jersey Transit one-stop service to New York Penn Station and to other NJ Transit rail service. Connections are available at the Hoboken Terminal to other New Jersey Transit rail lines, the PATH train at the Hoboken PATH station, New York Waterways ferry service to the World Financial Center and other destinations and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service.

The Pascack Valley Line is a single-track line providing service towards Hoboken during the morning rush hour and service from Hoboken in the evening rush hour.
