Encyclopedia : W : WO : WOO : Woodall Mountain

Woodall Mountain is the highest point in the U.S. state of Mississippi, with a summit elevation of 806 feet (246 meters) above mean sea level. It is located at [34°47′16″N, 88°14′30″W] in Tishomingo County near the town of Iuka.

The mountain is located just off of Mississippi State Highway 25, south of Iuka. The summit is marked with a National Geodetic Survey triangulation station disk and three radio towers. It is cautioned that visitors prepare for a steep, unpaved, and rocky inclined road approximately a mile in length to the summit.

Woodall Mountain was the scene of fighting during the American Civil War. On September 19, 1862, the Battle of Iuka took place. Union General William Rosecrans occupied the mountain and used it to launch artillery barrages on the town of Iuka. The battle was a victory for the Union.
