Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan is a Washington Metro station in Washington, DC on the Red Line. Located at 24th Street and Connecticut Avenue NW, it primarily serves the neighborhood of Woodley Park in Northwest Washington.
Service began on December 5, 1981 with the extension of the Red Line to Van Ness-UDC. At 160 feet deep, this is the second deepest station in the system. It was the first station in the system to deviate from the waffle-like coffers found at most underground stations in downtown Washington, instead using a simpler four-coffer arch. The advantage to the four-coffer arch was that it was pre-cast in Winchester, Virginia, and then simply hauled underground and installed on-site, as compared to the waffle-style arch, which had to be cast in place. This was done as a cost-saving measure. [link]
The name of the station at its opening was "Woodley Park-Zoo," reflecting its proximity to the National Zoo. However, not only is the zoo a half-mile uphill from the station, but it is downhill and almost the same distance from the next stop north, Cleveland Park. The station's name was originally titled "Zoological Park" but was changed shortly before the station's opening.
Neighborhood boosters compounded the misleading nature of the name in 1999 by adding "Adams Morgan" to the station name. It was added in order to capitalize on the trendiness of that neighborhood. However, Adams Morgan is actually located a mile to the east of the station (and is closer to the Columbia Heights stop). Metro operates a 25ยข shuttle bus connecting the station to the heart of the district. Critics blame the station's name change, as well as that of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, for beginning a trend that ultimately ended in a spate of station renamings throughout the system in the early 2000s.
A non-fatal accident occurred here on November 3, 2004 when a non-revenue (out of service) train lost its brakes and rolled back into the station, colliding with a revenue train servicing the station. Owing to the quick thinking of the operator of the revenue train who evacuated his train when he realized the collison was imminent, only 20 passengers received minor injuries.
