Woolworths Supermarkets (New Zealand) is a Auckland, New Zealand based supermarket chain and a unit of Australia's Woolworths Limited supermarket unit Woolworths Supermarkets. Like their parent company, it is not related to F.W. Woolworth.
Founded in 1929, the chain was separated from the parent company in Australia in 1979 when it was sold to L.D. Nathan. Ownership changed hands in 1990 when Hong Kong's Dairy Farm International acquired the chain and in 2001 the chain merged with Progressive Enterprises Limited (operator of Foodtown, Countdown, SuperValue and FreshChoice, Big Fresh and Price Chopper). In 2005, Woolworths Limited re-acquired the New Zealand unit again.
Operations
There are 63 Woolworth supermarkets and 22 Woolworth Quickstop and Micro Stores across New Zealand.
