A wrestling ring is the name for the ring stage that professional wrestlers wrestle in. It is composed of an elevated stage covered by a canvas that drapes into an apron on all sides of the ring. In each corner, a "turnbuckle" is located to provide support for the ring as well as to hold the ropes up.

Wrestling rings vary in shape and size. Most rings run from 12'-20' on each side. Most "traditional" rings (such as those used by World Wrestling Entertainment) are four-sided, but other rings such as the six-sided ring (utilized by TNA Wrestling and AAA Wrestling) and eight-sided rings (utilized by Ultimate Fighting Championship) are also utilized by major promoters.

The squared circle is a term used by professional wrestling promotions to refer to the ring. It comes from the reference to traditional Greco-Roman Wrestling, which consists of a mat on a floor with a ring painted on it in which the action takes place. This format is still used by amateur wrestling leagues throughout the world.

The original deviation may also be related to the mathematical problem of squaring the circle, or simply that it is referred to as a "ring," but is square in shape (a squared ring, or circle).
