Wyre, Orkney

Encyclopedia : W : WY : WYR : Wyre, Orkney

Wyre is one of the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland, lying south east of Rousay.

The small, but inhabited, island has two ancient monuments maintained by Historic Scotland (open at all times): Cubbie Roo's Castle, built in about 1150, possibly the oldest castle in Scotland, and the nearby twelfth century St Mary's Chapel. Wyre is also known for its grey and common seals, and for the poet Edwin Muir (1887-1959), born on the island.

Ferries sail from the island to Tingwall on the Orkney Mainland, Egilsay and Rousay.
