Xorg

Encyclopedia : X : XO : XOR : Xorg

XORG stands for Extreme Online Role-Playing Game and is a simplification of the term MMORPG/FPS. It describes a sub-genre of the MMORPG which has been mixed together with the first-person shooter genre. Opposing to standard MMORPGs in these games it more depends on aiming enemies with the mouse and shoot every shot on them by yourself. The community around this kind of games often differs enormously for the hunting and collection kind of players of normal MMORPGs.

Term Definition

The term XORG was orginaly invented by the company Smiling Gator Productions and used for genre definition of their project [[Twilight War: After the Fall]], which was originally cancelled because of financial issues and later licensed to General Computers. Since then the term has spread and has been widely adopted.

Control

Because of the high dependence on aiming and hitting of enemies and usable objects, XORGs are mostly controlled by mouse or trackball and a keyboard. Some of them also support the use of joysticks or gamepads.

As the most XORGs include a lot of roleplay elements they have to offer a way of interacting with the player characters inventory and access to character statistics or virtual computer terminals. Mostly this is done by a two way HUD. Within the first mode you are able to control your field of view, shoot or interact with objects in the game world. Mode two gives you a mouse pointer to control character specific windows to do specials actions or gain useful information. The modes are switchs by a previously specified button on one of the connected control devices.
