Xylene (Community)

Encyclopedia : X : XY : XYL : Xylene (Community)

Xylene Online Community, now called Xylene Community, was started by James Preece in late 1998. It was originally a community of Linux users who would register on the site to talk about various computing topics (and other stuff). Registered members could get free hosting space for websites upon request. The community continued to grow albeit slowly, because James was providing the hosting without charge to other members, there was no funding for advertising. The growth of the community depends on the word of mouth by its members.

Name Change

The community "fizzled" out after the website, prevously hosted elsewhere was accidentally deleted after a server upgrade went sour. Hosting was transferred to the main xylene server where the site was redesigned by Bjorn Lindh using MKPortal and SMF (Simple Machines Forum). James choose to expand Xylene into other areas such as professional hosting, webdesign, IP-Telephony and other services. The Xylene Online Community was changed to Xylene Community which now refers solely to the original Xylene linux community started in '98. Xylene Internet Services refers to the internet related services now provided by Xylene.

Member Contribution

While members will be able to avail of Xylenes services, they do ask for a few small things in return. Members are encouraged to tell people about them, and the services that they provide. Members with a broadband internet connection and a spare PC are asked to setup a server to add to Xylenes server farm.
