Yaphett El-Amin

Yaphett El-Amin (born March 30, 1971) is an American politician who currently represents a portion of North St. Louis in the Missouri House of Representatives. She is a Democrat.

El-Amin is a native of St. Louis. She graduated from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff with a BA in political science and is pursuing a masters degree in public administration at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.

El-Amin entered politics in 1997, when she became Democratic Committeewoman for the 1st Ward. In 2002, she was a successul candidate for the Democratic nomination for State Representative in the 57th District[link]. She was elected without opposition in the general election [link] and was re-elected without opposition in 2004 [link] [link].

In 2005, El-Amin announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for the 4th District State Senate to replace Pat Dougherty. Dougherty is retiring due to term limits. Other announced canidates include fellow state representative Amber Boykins, former State Representative Derio Gambaro, former St. Louis Alderman Kenny Jones [link], and political science professor Jeff Smith. The Democratic primary will be held on August 8, 2006, and the general election will be in November.
