Year of Africa

1960 is known as the Year of Africa. Thirteen nations in West and Equatorial Africa gained their independence from France during this year; Cameroon, Togo, Senegal, Mali, Côte D'Ivoire, Chad, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Mauritania, Niger, Benin, Central African Republic, and the Republic of the Congo.
Madagascar also became independent from France in 1960 , but it is also considered an Indian Ocean state and "is predominantly of mixed Asian and African origin" see Madagascar
Somalia and Nigeria were also granted independence in 1960 from the United Kingdom and the Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo) was also independent from Belgium during this year.
