Yeongeunmun Gate
Encyclopedia : Y : YE : YEO : Yeongeunmun Gate
The Yeongeunmun Gate(Hangul: 영은문) was the gate in Korea to welcome a Chinese envoy to Korea.
Korea was Chinese protectorate until 1895, and successive Korean kings were under orders to meet a Chinese envoy in front of the gate. Before Korean king met a Chinese envoy, the king had to kneel on the ground and hit his head 9 times on the ground to show his allegiance to Chinese emperor.
In 1895, Japan made Qing Dynasty China recognize the independence of Korea in the Treaty of Shimonoseki due to the fact that China was defeated by Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War. For this reason, Korea became an independent country, pulled down the Gate, built a new gate called the Independence Gate at the same place.
There is the Samjeondo Monument in Seoul, Korea, and it describes the situation that a Korean king knelt on the ground and met a Chinese envoy.
