Ynetnews is an English language Israel news and content website operated by Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel’s most-read newspaper, and the Hebrew Israel news portal, Ynet. The Yedioth Group also owns stocks in the Israeli TV Channel "Channel 2"; "Hot", the Cable TV company, weekly local newspapers, magazines, and other non-media companies.

History

Ynetnews was established in 2005 in Tel Aviv with the goal of providing the Jewish community and Israel-supporters worldwide reporting and real-time breaking news from Israel and the Middle East. The Founding Editor of Ynetnews, Alan Abbey, left in the summer of 2005 and Ynetnews is now headed by Jon Feder, Editor-in-Chief of Ynet.

Ynetnews’ team of translators and editors provide 24/7 coverage of news from Israel and the Middle East, based on the reporting and writing of Ynet and from Yedioth Ahronoth and other publications of the parent company, Yedioth Group.

Ynetnews also produces original material and works with in-depth news reporting, commentary and analysis by Israel’s public opinion makers as well as features from Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world.

Criticism

Ynetnews is generally considered to have a secular post-Zionist outlook. It is highly criticized in the Orthodox Jewish world for being virulently anti-Orthodox and anti-settler. Aside from being perceived as regularly writing highly biased articles about especially the Haredi world, Ynetnews regularly shows its ignorance such as calling the Religious Zionists of America a 'Haredi' organization as well as its discrimination by singling out religious groups in criticisms of social injustice. Due to this antagonism, in the Haredi world, Yedioth Ahronoth is often referred to by a play on words: Idiot Ahronoth.

This section of the website aims to provide in-depth, real time coverage of news from Israel, the Middle East, the War on Terror, the Israeli Palestinian conflict, Israeli business and Israeli Jewish culture. Recently, more videos have been added to articles. The videos are usually in Hebrew only.

Breaking News from Israel

Breaking news headlines from Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World ranging from Israeli Politics and Terrorism through Palestinian Affairs. Free RSS feeds of Breaking News from Israel are available as well as feeds of All the News, Opinion, Culture, and Jewish Scene stories.

Global Terror Desk

The Global Terror Desk aims to provide in-depth coverage and analysis of news, trends, factions and events in the Global War on Terror, the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, and Jihad activity worldwide.

Weather Channel

The Weather Channel provides updated forecasts and current temperatures for Israel and world cities. However, temperatures by default show only in Fahrenheit, even though in Israel only Celsius temperatures are used and all other websites show temperatures only in Celsius. Users wishing to see the temperatures in Celsius must click a button to switch to Celsius for every other temperature they want to see, significantly annoying European readers who use Celsius and are usually not at all familiar with Fahrenheit.

Opinion Channel

The Opinion Channel offers in-depth analysis on trends on Israel news, Israeli and Jewish culture, Religion, the Peace Process and the Middle East and the Jewish world

Financial News

Financial News: Headlines and market quotes from Israeli stock markets and Israeli banks and companies, as well as investor and consumer information.

Culture

The Culture Channel contains articles about Israeli and Jewish culture, music style, movies, television, theater, books, art, celebrities and events of secular, Reform and Conservative Jewish culture. Due to its secular background, it avoids writing about Orthodox Judaism.

Jewish Scene

The Jewish Scene channel focuses on events, people and trends in the Jewish world, Jewish communities, Judaism, anti-Semitism and Jewish genealogy. Here also, it avoids Orthodox Judaism. It showed its ignorance about the Orthodox Jewish world in July 2006 when it referred to the 'Kabbalah Center' as an 'Orthodox Jewish sect'. [link]

The Travel Channel provides Israel travel information, tourist attractions and main sites of the Holy Land.

Special Events in Israel

Special events in Israel news or Israeli culture the likes of the Gaza Withdrawal, the Israeli Elections, and Jerusalem Day receives special attention as interactive maps, videos and analysis accompany them.

Weekly Newsletter

Ynetnews’ weekly newsletter is mailed free of charge to subscribers providing them with the past week’s top Israel news headlines and magazine features.

Talkback Feature

Ynet allows readers to respond to all articles using the "Talkback" feature as at the end of each item. This allows for at times heated discussions between readers of various types of Jews, ethnicities, religions and nationalities.
