The original spelling is "Joder," where the German J is pronounced like an English Y. The origin of the name is a shortened version of Saint Theodore, who was active in Switzerland in the 15th century. Other surnames, such as Yothers, are also derived from this.

A great many Yoders in the United States trace their lineage back to the Mennonites and Amish, who settled in the US in the 18th century to practice their religion. In some regions where there is a heavy Amish presence, approximately 25% of the population has the Yoder family name.
