Encyclopedia : Y : YO : YOL : Yolanda Montez

Yolanda Montez was a fictional superheroine in DC Comics universe. Her first appearance was in Infinity Inc. #12 (March 1985). She was created by Roy Thomas and Todd McFarlane.

Roy and Dann Thomas originally intended to create a Canadian superheroine named The Lynx for new 1980s-era descendants of the All-Star Squadron. Later he changed the character to a Mexican called "La Garra" (The Claw). (This character actually appeared, drawn by Mike Machlan and Jerry Ordway, in All-Star Squadron #28 (Dec. 1983)) This character eventually evolved into Yolanda in Infinity, Inc.

Character history

Maria Montez and her sister were given experimental drugs by the mad gynecologist Dr. Love while they were pregnant. Dr. Love kept close tabs on most of his experiments, but lost track of the sisters when they travelled to Mexico. In Mexico, Maria's daughter Yolanda was born on the same day her sister gave birth to Carcharo. Yolanda and her mother returned to America to be reunited with Mr. "Mauler" Montez. As a child, Yolanda manifested her superhuman powers, but was unaware of why she was born a mutant. She grew close to her godfather, Ted Grant, who was the mystery man Wildcat during the 1940s. Years later, during the Crisis, Grant was crippled while saving a child. Yolanda become Wildcat II to honor her godfather and the principles he represented.

As Wildcat II, she joined Infinity Inc. and fought alongside them until the team disbanded. Ted Grant was at first annoyed with the young upstart, but when he discovered that she was none other than his god-daughter, he gave Yolanda his blessing. Her superhuman powers included retractable claw-like fingernails and cat-like agility. She withdrew from active heroing, but was later brought out of retirement to fight Eclipso alongside The Shadow Fighters. She was slashed open with a sword, by Eclipso, and died in issue 13 of the Eclipso series. She was the cousin of former JSA Museum curator Alex Montez, who defeated Eclipso and gained his power to avenge Yolanda. Unfortunately Alex eventually lost control and Eclipso took over once again, Alex sacrificed himself so that Eclipso would not use him. Hawkgirl lied to Alex' parents and said he died a hero.
