Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw

Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw (Rough translation: St. Woolos Comprehensive School) is a Welsh medium school located in the Pontypool suburb of Trevethin. The school was founded in 1988 as the first Welsh medium school in Gwent and is housed in accommodation previously used for Trevethin Community School (that school then moved to the Victorian buildings that once housed Pontypool Girls' Grammar School). For its first three years Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw was housed in the old Abercarn Infants school house but soon outgrew the building. As one of the fastest growing schools in Wales bigger premises were needed and the old Trevethin upper school was suggested by the education authority.
Pupils at the school are taught completely in Welsh and come from Welsh language feeder schools such as Ysgol Gynradd Cymraeg Cwmbrân (literally: Cwmbrân Welsh Primary School) in Cwmbrân. The aim is to immerse pupils in Welsh and to enable them to be educated entirely in their native language. It is partly due to the success of Gwynllyw that the number of Wesh speakers in Gwent increases year on year.
The school became a controversial one as the education authority not only forced out a then successful Trevethin Community School (that now faces closure) but also that the school's location means much of the school population has to be taken into school on subsidised buses. Some of the local residents still feel some bitterness about how the education authority went about downsizing their local school.
Despite these issues Gwynllyw remains a thriving school with many successes to its name.
