|} Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX (遊☆戯☆王デュエル モンスターズGX Yūgiō Dyueru Monsutāzu GX) is an anime spinoff of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
Produced by Nihon Ad Systems Inc., or NAS for short, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX started airing on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 6, 2004. The anime is licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and currently airs in Canada on YTV, Fridays at 6pm, and in the UK on ITV2, weekdays at 8am. It is likely that it will begin airing on Sky One in the UK soon, replacing Yu-Gi-Oh! in the Saturday and Sunday morning line-up. According to the Capsule Monsters DVD, GX will come to DVD in the United States summer 2006. In North America, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is distributed by Warner Bros. Television Animation and 4Kids Entertainment.
A manga version of GX authored by Naoyuki Kageyama (影山なおゆき Kageyama Naoyuki) is published in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine in Japan. The manga will appear in the United States Shonen Jump magazine starting in December 2006.
Story
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX begins with the lead character, Jaden Yuki obtaining a card, Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo), from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou in the English manga), the renowned Duel Monsters champion. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows the exploits of Jaden and his companions as he attends Duel Academy. The Academy was created by Seto Kaiba on a remote island, with its dormitories named after the three Egyptian God Cards. The most elaborate dormitory, Obelisk Blue (オベリスク・ブルー Oberisuku Burū), is named after Obelisk the Tormentor. The Obelisk Blue dormitory can be graduated to, but the only way to enter the dorm in the first year is to attend and do well at an affiliated junior school. As the highest ranked dormitory, Obelisk Blue's facilities are of the highest quality, on the level of the world's classiest hotels and restaurants. The center dorm, Ra Yellow (ラー・イェロー Rā Ierō), is named after The Winged Dragon of Ra. Those who were given the highest scores in the entrance exam, or who only did mediocrely in the junior school enter this dormitory, which, while not as extravagant as Obelisk Blue, still has incredibly clean and well-kept facilities and meals of a quality far above the lifestyle of the average salaryman. The lowest dorm, Slifer Red (Osiris Red; オシリス・レッド Oshirisu Reddo), is named after Slifer the Sky Dragon. Those who failed completely or scored poorly are put into the shoddy dorms of Slifer Red. The naming choices reflect Kaiba's bias over the God Cards.
Characters
Main characters
Names are in Western order, with the surname after the given name.
- Judai Yuki (遊城 十代 Yūki Jūdai) / Jaden Yuki - Jaden Yuki is the main character of the series, who lives in the worst dormitory of Duel Academy, Slifer Red. 15-year old Jaden receives the rare Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo, ハネクリボー Hane Kuribō) card, which becomes his spirit partner, from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou), the famous duelist from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. In the first season, he plays an Elemental Hero deck, but by the second, he loses the ability to see his cards temporarily, and is given a Neos deck with cards he created when he was young.
- Asuka Tenjouin (天上院 明日香 Tenjōin Asuka) / Alexis Rhodes - 15-year old Alexis is a strong female duelist from the Obelisk Blue dormitory. She plays a Cyber Girl deck. In the second season, she protects Obelisk Blue from being converted by the Society of Light, only to become one of its leading members herself.
- Sho Marufuji (丸藤 翔 Marufuji Shō) / Syrus Truesdale - 15-year old Syrus is the weaker younger brother of Zane Truesdale and a friend of Jaden's, and initially a student of Slifer Red. Syrus looks to Jaden as an older brother since (he feels) his true older brother Zane is ashamed of having a weakling for a brother (In the original anime, Ryo is less ashamed, and wishes for his brother to learn from his mistakes, as well as to learn to respect his opponents). He plays a Vehicroid deck, and advances to Ra Yellow in the second year.
- Ryo Marufuji (丸藤 亮 Marufuji Ryō) / Zane Truesdale - 17-year old Zane is Syrus's stronger older brother, who resides in the Obelisk Blue dormitory. Nicknamed "Kaiser", Zane is (at least his brother assumes) ashamed of having a weaker younger brother. In reality, he loves his younger brother, and only wants him to improve (in the original, he also wishes for his brother to learn what Ryo values most in a duel - to respect the opponent, and to give them the best duel possible). Zane plays a Cyber Dragon deck. In the second year, he moves on to the Duel Pro League, but is defeated by Aster Phoenix. Afterward, Zane begins to take a downward spiral, losing match after match, until being demoted to the minor leagues and eventually losing his sponsorship deals. When things look worst, he is approached by a mysterious promoter who invites Zane to the Underground Duel, which involves the contestants suffering physical pain when they lose Life Points. Zane takes a beating throughout the battle before finally deciding that his former ideal of respect was misguided, instead deciding to win no matter the cost. After a vicious turnabout, Zane returns to the Pro League as "Hell Kaiser."
- Jun Manjoume (万丈目 準 Manjōme Jun) / Chazz Princeton - 15-year old Chazz is a strong duelist from the Obelisk Blue dormitory, who has a crush on Alexis. He greatly dislikes Jaden, though as the series continues, they come to a shakey truce. Chazz's family pressures him to do his best, as his two brothers are famous in both the financial and political worlds. Chazz, after losing to Bastion, left the school and later returned, only to be put in Slifer Red dormitory with Jaden. Chazz is constantly altering his deck, but none of his changes go without his spirit partners, the Ojama Trio. During the second season, Chazz is defeated by Aster Phoenix's manager, Saiou, and reveals that he still desperately wants to defeat Jaden. Saiou takes advantage of this desire and coerces Chazz into being a member of the Society of Light, whose mission is to convert Duel Academy.
- Cronos de Medici (クロノス・デ・メディチ Kuronosu de Medichi) / Dr. Vellian Crowler - 35-year old Vellian Crowler is the leader of the Obelisk dormitory. At first, he holds a grudge against Jaden who he believes to be a slacker and tries to get rid of him on many occasions, but by the second season, protects Slifer Red from demolition multiple times. He plays an Ancient Gear deck.
- Daichi Misawa (三沢 大地 Misawa Daichi) / Bastion Misawa - An analytical 15-year old of Ra Yellow who plays seven different decks. During the second year, Bastion is one of the few duelists not recognized by the Society of Light, which leads him to challenge Saiou himself. Chazz, however, duels in his place, and Saiou plays on Bastion's anxieties to draw him into the organization.
- Hayato Maeda (前田 隼人 Maeda Hayato) / Chumley Huffington - A friend of Jaden's who is a student of Slifer Red, 16-year old Chumley has a face that resembles that of a koala. His father, Kumazo Huffington (Kumazo Maeda), is a famous duelist. In the Japanese version his father has a drinking problem involving sake, while in the English version his father is the owner of a successful hot sauce company. Towards the end of Duel Academy's first year, Chumley leaves the school to work with Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford) as a card designer. He plays a Koala deck.
- Tyranno Kenzan (ティラノ剣山 Tirano Kenzan) - A new student of Duel Academy introduced in the second year. He plays a Dinosaur deck, and stays in the Slifer Red dormitory despite being a duelist of Ra Yellow. He reveals that he has a fragment of dinosaur bone in his leg, and claims that his bond with Jaden awakened the power of his "dinosaur DNA," allowing him to resist Saiou's control after a losing duel.
- Ed Phoenix (エド・フェニックス Edo Fenikkusu) / Aster Phoenix - A Pro League duelist introduced in the second year with a troubled past. Aster's plays a Hero deck, composed of Elemental Heroes and Destiny Heroes. His major motivation in life is to find the criminal who murdered his father, a card designer, and recover the Hero card the criminal stole.

Atticus resurfaces as Nightshroud (Darkness; ダークネス Dākunesu), the first Shadow Rider. Atticus, as Nightshroud, wears a dark dragon mask and is possessed by an evil persona. After he is set free, Atticus has almost no memory of what had transpired, but he manages to help Jaden by giving him the other half of the Shadow Charm in his possession. Over time, Atticus regains his memory and reverts to his old self, much to the annoyance of his sister, as he constantly tried to set her up with duelists, or to go into show business with him. As Nightshroud, he plays a Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon deck.

She is very serious when it comes to dueling, as she hoped to revive her race from its destruction by the people of Medieval Times. After his defeat by Chazz, he and the rest of the Dark Scorpions faded away, leaving behind their cards. He plays a Dark Scorpion Gang deck.
- Abidos the Third (アビドス3世 Abidosu Sanse) - The fifth Shadow Rider. He is the spirit of an ancient pharaoh who never lost a single duel. Not realizing that he only kept winning because his opponents always lost on purpose, simply because he was pharaoh, Abidos joined the Shadow Riders to find someone who would duel him with true passion. He plays a Servants of the Pharaoh deck.
- Titan (タイタン Taitan) - A hitman formerly hired by Crowler to deal with Jaden, Titan was the one who captured Alexis and forced Jaden to duel for her safety. Despite his reputation of possessing the power of a Millennium Item, the "Millennium Item" was a fake Millennium Puzzle, and Titan used various tricks to mimic a Shadow Game. Falling victim to a true Shadow Game, he is saved by Kagemaru, returns as the sixth Shadow Rider, and duels Alexis. He plays an Archfiend deck, which is later supported by Fiend's Bullfighter cards.
- Daitokuji (大徳寺) / Lyman Banner - The professor of Slifer Red. The "Banner" that Jaden, Syrus, and Chumley know is revealed to be Amnael (アムナエル Amunaeru), the seventh and final Shadow Rider, who is actually a homunculus made in his former image. He plays an Alchemy deck.

Trivia
- "GX" is short for the term "Generation neXt" obviously referring to the time of Duel Monsters' "Next Generation". "GENEX" was also the tentative title shown for the show in early promotional work. "GX" also refers to the Genex tournament beginning episode 84. The logo is the same as the "GX" in the title art.
- The shift from the original series to GX is accompanied by the notion of modernization. Dueling technology has evolved, and cybernetics surface as a prevalent theme among monsters, either in totality (Cyber Dragons/Vehicroids), or enhancement through the addition of machinery (Cyber Girls/Dinosaurs/Tarot) to emphasize the replacement of the ancient with the futuristic. Furthermore, the monster stat displays and Life Points counters change from blue and gold print to digital readouts with color-coded energy bars (Dub only).
- Chaos Emperor Dragon, similar to its counterpart in the actual card game, is banned in sanctioned tournaments in the anime.
