Yucca de Lac

Encyclopedia : Y : YU : YUC : Yucca de Lac

Yucca de Lac (Chinese: 雍雅山房; Cantonese Yale: yūng ngáh sāan fòhng, Jyutping: jung1 ngaa5 saan1 fong4; Mandarin Pinyin: Yōng Yǎ Shānfáng) was a high-end restaurant in Hong Kong, famous for frequently serving as a scene for the black-and-white Cantonese films (known as 粵語長片 in Chinese) made the 1960s. Located at Tai Po Road - Ma Liu Shui, near the Chinese University of Hong Kong, it was opened in 1963 and closed on September 20 2005.

The scene of a man and a woman having afternoon tea under a parasol in that restaurant is part of the collective memory of many Hong Kongers, though few people themselves have been there (and the food served there was said to be not particularly good). The site of the restaurant has been sold to a local businessman at HKD 360 million, to be developed as a real estate project. There are concern from environmental groups that the woodland on the site will not be preserved.

The name, as can be easily guessed, means "yucca by the lake" in French.
