Encyclopedia : Y : YU : YUI : Yui Horie

is a popular singer and voice actress (seiyū) in Japan. She was born September 20, 1976. Horie's given name is Yoshiko and she is sometimes affectionately nicknamed in Japanese by her fans.

History & Biography

Yoshiko Horie was born in 1976 in Japan, Tokyo. As a child, she was a huge fan of the anime-series "Dirty Pair" and has later stated that the series was her first inspiration to become a voice artist. She disliked math and English, but enjoyed Japanese, so being an actor by craft didn't sound that bad, either.

She debuted in 1997 in a video game Voice Fantasia. For a long time, she was very unnoticed and got only minor roles in various animes. She got the leading role of Haruka in Kurogane Communication, but the series never was a big hit. It wasn't until the year 2000 when she got the role of Naru Narusegawa in Love Hina that she gained notoriety. When she got the role of Tohru Honda in Fruits Basket and released a music album (Mizutamari ni Utsuru Sekai), she was on her way to become one of the most popular voice actresses in Japan.

She is currently working for Starchild and she frequently has roles in popular new anime. Despite her major success, she usually does not get leading roles, although recently she was cast as the lead in Matantei Loki Ragnarok.

She has published five independent musical albums, although nearly all of them incorporate at least one track from an anime she has worked with.
