Yusin Constitution

Encyclopedia : Y : YU : YUS : Yusin Constitution

The Yusin Constitution, also spelled Yushin, was the official constitution of the South Korean Fourth Republic, 1972–1979. It was promulgated by the government of Park Chung Hee on October 17, 1972. A referendum was held to ratify it on December 12, 1972, and the government announced that the constitution had been adopted. Its adoption marked the end of the Third Republic. The name "Yusin" literally means "restoration", although exactly what it was meant to restore is not clear.

After Park had already succeeded in having the National Assembly amend the constitution in 1969 to allow him a third term as president, the Yusin Constitution was marked by the enormous powers granted to the executive. Most notably, Park gained the power to appoint a large portion of the National Assembly, effectively guaranteeing a parliamentary majority.

The provisions of the Yusin Constitution were greeted with widespread but ineffective protest. It remained in effect until after Park's death in 1979.
