Zagorka, produced and named after the city of Stara Zagora, is one of the most popular brands of lager in Bulgaria. Zagorka is a full body, mildly-hoppy and richly-flavored lager with 5% alcohol by volume. It is commonly considered, by beer connaisseurs who have sampled dozens of lagers, ales, and pilsners from dozens of countries in Eastern Europe, as being the best tasting beer in the region.[[Citing sources citation needed]] In 2005, a 1.5 liter bottle of Zagorka could be purchased for less than 2 euros throughout much of Sofia.
In the mid-1990s, Zagorka Brewery became a fully-owned subsidiary of Dutch brewing giant Heineken. The Zagorka Brewery also produces the Ariana, Stolichno, Heineken, Amstel and Murphy's brands.
Zagorka's main competitor for sales on the local market is InBev-owned Kamenitza.
