Zakka, from the Japanese 'zak-ka' or 'many things' is a fashion and design phenomenon that has spread from Japan throughout Asia.

Zakka is the term for everything and anything that spruces up your home, life and outlook. It is primarily based on household items from the West that are regarded as kitsch in their countries of origin.

Zakka has also been described as "the art of seeing the savvy in the ordinary and mundane". On one level the zakka boom is just another in a series of consumer fads, but on another it's plugged into something spiritual. Cute, corny and kitsch is not enough. To qualify as a zakka, a product must be attractive, sensitive, laden with subtexts.

This [article from the International Herald Tribune] describes the trend in detail.

The Danish independent film [Zakka West]from 2003 is one of the first examples of the zakka fad reaching the West.
