Zål (زال in Persian) was a mythical warrior of ancient Iran. He was an albino, and his name is used in Persian to refer to those who suffer from albinism. Zal was the son of Saam and the grandson of Nariman, both heroes of ancient Iran and protectors of "Iran-zamin". Because of his defect, Zal was rejected by his father who ordered his servants to leave the baby in the mountains. The Mythical bird Simurgh finds the baby and takes him to her nest where Zal lives until being reunited with his family. Soon after rejoining his family, Zal marries Rudaba; their child was the great hero Rostam.
