It is popular in parts of the Middle East, where people both enjoy soft drinks and appreciate alternatives to U.S. brands such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola for political reasons. It is also sold in Europe.

The product's name is a nod to the sacred Well of Zamzam, near the Islamic holy city of Mecca, where tradition has it that Hagar drew water for her son Ishmael.
