The Brussels International Airport is located in this municipality as is the United States Department of Defense school.
The official language is Flemish (Dutch) (as everywhere in Flanders). Small local minorities consist of nationals from many European Union-countries, USA and Canada, and from French-speakers that came from Wallonia or Brussels.
An old name of the municipality is Saventhem.
