Zhovkva (Ukrainian: Жовква, Polish: Żółkiew, German: Zolkiew) is a city in the Lviv Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Zhovkivsky Raion (district).
The current estimated population is 36,000.
History
The site of Zhovkva has been inhabitated since the 14th century. In 1594 the Polish nobleman Stanisław Żółkiewski fortified the settlement and constructed a castle. In only a few years the town grew greatly in size, becoming a 17th century residence for King John III Sobieski of Poland. While part of the Soviet Union, Zhovkva in 1951 was renamed Nesterov after the World War I aviator Pyotr Nesterov. The name Zhovkva was restored in 1992.People
