Zombie Panic! is a multiplayer game and modification for Counter-Strike and Half-life in which the last remaining humans must fend for themselves against a horde of Zombies. It is currently in open beta playtesting. And as for the source engine Zombie Panic or Zombie Panic: Source, it is now in internal alpha.
Gameplay
When the game starts, one player is selected to be the zombie. The remaining players are placed on the team of humans, which is known as the "Survivors". The goal of the zombie is to kill all of the humans. The humans' goal, of course, is to kill the zombies and to stay alive as long as possible. The thing that makes the game interesting is, when a zombie is killed, he simply respawns and continues to play. If a human is killed, he respawns as a zombie. Humans die and join the ranks of the zombies, until there is only one human left, facing all of the zombies alone. When the last human dies, the round is over. Survivors can win the game by killing off all of the zombie reinforcements (the default is 20).Maps are generally divided into two types, the standard type, and the "escape" or "objective" type. In these, the amount of zombie reinforcements is set to a level (usually 100) where it would be almost impossible for the Survivors to wipe them out. Victory is instead obtained by clearing objectives before being overwhelmed.
Teams
Humans have several advantages over the zombies:
- Speed - The zombies only move at 80% of the speed of a human player, so all other things being equal, a human can outrun a zombie in a straight line. However, the more weaponry and ammo a human picks up, they slower he will move. This tends to discourage ammo hoarding.
- Firearms - The Survivors have a great advantage in the form of ranged weapons, and in a long hallway, with plenty of distance between a human and a zombie, the human should have no trouble dropping the zombie with multiple slugs before he gets in range of the zombie's claws. Unfortunately, ammo is scarce, and you won't always have a nice long hallway to shoot down. Zombies *love* tight spaces.
- Numbers - At the beginning of the round, the Survivors greatly outnumber the zombies. This means that they can easily watch each other's backs and provide cover fire. However, once the ammo starts to run dry, humans have to squabble amongst themselves for the few precious magazines of ammo available.
Zombies also have some advantages:
- Persistence - Zombies may seem to die often, but they won't give up. They just keep respawning over and over until your pistol runs out of bullets, your back is to the wall, and there is no escape.
- Numbers - Later on in the game, as the undead ranks swell with the freshly dead, the last few humans will find their superior weaponry small compensation for the hordes of zombies that close in.
- Health - Zombies start with twice the amount of health as a survivor, and they also slowly regenerate health.
Zombie Panic: Source
Zombie Panic: Source is based on source engine and has the same gameplay as it's original game. Zombie Panic: Source will be estimated release in 2006 and is currently in Internal Alpha.
Criticisms
Zombie Panic's gameplay of Zombies vs. armed civilians often causes the case of balance issues in games. Because the zombie team only starts with one member, some maps can have the civilians simply reach a small place that is hard to breach for the zombies like a tower or one-doored room too quick for the zombie to gain any kills, causing them to easily overcome it with all the firearms. In smaller games, the civilians can grab more weapons making it nearly impossible for the zombie to reach them if the lives counter is too small. And because of limited weapons in each map, some players take most of the weapons leaving the rest of the team with almost no ammo or weapons.External links
