Overview
There are three types of gameplay: tutorial, scenario, and freeform.
Tutorial
Tutorials teach novices the basics of the game. The tutorials teach zoo-building skills that are not limited to:- putting in buildings and scenery
- building a regular exhibit
- building a dinosaur exhibit
- building a marine exhibit
- building a combined exhibit (an exhibit that combines aspects of a regular exhibit and a marine exhibit)
Scenario
Scenarios test a person's skill at the game by making them complete certain objectives, usually in a given amount of time. These objectives can range from breeding giant pandas to good suitability for each exhibit.Freeform
When the player first starts a new freeform game, they see an open zoo, ready for development. First, the player must create exhibits for animals to live in. After exhibits are created, guests will start attending the zoo. Eventually, one will need to put in guest facilities and expand your zoo. The ultimate goal of Zoo Tycoon is to become a "Zoo Tycoon". The freeform allows the player to create a zoo without fearing to lose, the only way to lose freeform is to run out of money.Success and expansion
Zoo Tycoon was created in the image of the 1999 Hasbro Interactive game RollerCoaster Tycoon, which sold well for many years. Zoo Tycoon was not as successful as RollerCoaster Tycoon and Theme Park World, but it did well enough for Microsoft and Blue Fang Games to release two expansion packs: Dinosaur Digs, which added prehistoric animals, and Marine Mania, which added aquatic functionality and animals.Eventually, Microsoft bundled the expansion packs with Zoo Tycoon to create Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection which had the functionality of both expansion packs and bonus content. This new edition, gained sufficient profit for Microsoft to release yet another version: Zoo Tycoon 2. This was created after Zoo Empire came out, which made Microsoft's Zoo Tycoon out of date.#redirect Zoo Tycoon 2 has significantly better graphics, although the animal choices are more limited.
