Álvaro I of Kongo

Álvaro I, born Nimi a Lukeni lua Mvemba, was Manikongo, or king of Kongo, from 1568 to 1587. Seeking to reduce the Portuguese role in the region, particularly the debilitating slave trade, he unsuccessfully appealed for aid from Pope Gregory XIII in 1583. In 1587, he was succeeded by his son Álvaro II.
